What does end of support mean to customers?

It means you should take action. After April 8, 2014, there will be no new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options or online technical content updates.

Running Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 in your environment after their end of support date may expose your company to potential risks, such as:

Security & Compliance Risks: Unsupported and unpatched environments are vulnerable to security risks. This may result in an officially recognized control failure by an internal or external audit body, leading to suspension of certifications, and/or public notification of the organization’s inability to maintain its systems and customer information.

Lack of Independent Software Vendor (ISV) & Hardware Manufacturers support: A recent industry report from Gartner Research suggests "many independent software vendors (ISVs) are unlikely to support new versions of applications on Windows XP in 2011; in 2012, it will become common."

How to prepare for your Windows 7 Upgrade

When prepping your upgrade to Windows 7, make note of all the applications you are using and ensure that they can run on Windows 7. Along with checking your software compatibility, also make note of any external hardware devices you may use that require drivers and check compatibility of those as well.

Check to make sure you have enough free space to compensate for the large size of Windows 7 Pro. For example, Windows XP can take as little as 1.5GB of storage whereas Windows 7 64-bit takes at least 20GB. If you do not have enough space, we provide hard drive upgrade options at the time of purchase for your convenience.

If you choose to use our Migration Service we can transfer most files such as Word docs, PDFs, music, movies etc (but not applications). If you choose not to go with this service, make sure you perform the necessary backups using either your own external drive or cloud based solution.

Your Windows 7 Pro install will be a fresh, clean install. All data on the drive will be wiped and it will not be possible to recover should you need to.

How long will it take?

From the time it gets to our service center in California, it will take no longer than 2 business days to complete the XP to 7 Professional upgrade process. If Migration and Cleaning is added on, it will depend on our production schedule but this normally wouldn't affect the ship date at all. If there happens to be any delays or issues we will inform you immediately or state it formally in a quote to forewarn you.

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just buy a new hard drive and caddy and keep what I have?
Of course! Simply "upgrade" to a hard drive size of your choice when purchasing the Windows 7 Pro upgrade and make sure to purchase the appropriate caddy in our Accessories section for the model you are upgrading.

I need this upgrade fast, can I upgrade the shipping?
Yes, please email or call us with your information and we can send a custom quote. Please note that this does not speed up the 2 day upgrade process, only the shipping times.

Why should I go with you guys and not Best Buy or just do it myself?
Tough Rugged Laptops' engineers are not only Microsoft Refurbished Licensed but have several years of experience working with Panasonic Toughbook and other rugged laptops on a daily basis. Panasonic Toughbook laptops are unique in how one must install drivers, upgrade the BIOS and how they must maintain stability to ensure full functionality of external hardware.
